Lion’s Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus)

Lion’s mane mushroom is a white shaggy fungus that has been widely studied in recent years. It has been found to have many benefits for the human body including boosting immunity, promoting healthy skin, and helping with neurological disorders. Lion’s Mane mushroom is so named for it’s uncanny likeness to a lion’s mane. The white, pom-pom-shaped mushrooms are most often found in North American forests.

Nervous System & Brain Support

The most touted benefit of Lion’s Mane is that it increases nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF is a protein that helps to keep neurons healthy and functioning properly. It has been shown to help improve cognitive function, memory, and mood. Lion’s mane mushroom is one of the few compounds that can help in recovery from traumatic brain injury. Lion’s Mane Mushroom has been shown to have benefits for neurological disorders. (ie Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease, etc) It contains compounds that help protect the brain from damage and repair myelin sheaths.

Other Benefits

Lion’s Mane Mushrooms are used in (TCM) traditional Chinese medicine and have been used to treat respiratory issues and digestive concerns.

Lion’s mane mushroom is also a great source of antioxidants and polysaccharides which can help boost the immune system. It has been shown to increase the number of white blood cells and T-cells, which are important for fighting off infection. Additionally, Lion’s Mane Mushroom contains antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals, the byproducts of cellular metabolism that can damage cells. Research on mice suggests that Lion’s Mane mushrooms may boost the activity of the intestinal immune system. The results of another study on mice indicate that a protein in lion’s mane mushrooms encourages the growth of beneficial gut bacteria that strengthen immunity.

Lion’s Mane Mushroom is great for the skin because it contains antioxidants that prevent free radical damage to cells. This can help with conditions like acne outbreaks caused by inflammation or sun exposure. It also has anti-ageing properties that promote healthier-looking skin over time.
